John E. Buell

John Buell got a call while at the dinner table on October 16, 1942.  He told his wife his help was needed and headed out.  Bethesda was experiencing heavy flooding that night and John went to help pull out a car that had stalled in high water on River Road.  John hooked up the vehicle and asked his helper to begin winching it to the truck.  As John was in the water alongside the car, a rush of water swept the car and John into the river.  John drowned as a result, leaving behind his wife and two children.
